This New England style fowler has a cherry halfstock with a black ebony forend cap. The 38" octagon-to-round Colerain barrel is fitted with a steel rib and ramrod pipes. The fowler is fitted with a sling swivel and button. A leather and jute sling is included. The barrel is signed "Bassbird" on the top flat, and stamped B. Barrow on the bottom flat. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8 pounds.

The 20 gauge Colerain 38" octagon-to-round barrel has a 12-1/2" octagon breech with a single wedding band. The extreme choke was designed by Mr. Keith Casteel, for shot only. The .620" diameter bore chokes to .580" at the muzzle. Use only lead or bismuth shot in this fowler. You can use 20 gauge wool wads, or if using traditional wads and cards use a 20 gauge over powder card #WAD-20-A passed through on edge then flipped. Use a 24 gauge lubricated fiber wad #WAD-24-C that can pass through the choke without damage. The thin 20 gauge overshot card #WAD-20-B is flexible enough to pass through the choke.

A tall, wide, nearly flat buttplate is fitted to the cherry stock. The stock has a few small handling marks from use. Inletting is fair with a few small gaps on the buttplate comb. Th wrist is checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The barrel is fitted with an early style flat faced hooked breech and tang. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, close the frizzen, drift the key past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. You will also have to remove the front swivel screw if you want to completely free the barrel from the sling. The rounded toe tapers toward the lock panels. The toe of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel button. The forward swivel is mounted through a the barrel rib and is correctly positioned to rest against a ramrod pipe to prevent blocking the ramrod channel. The forearm is not quite oval and has defined sides and a bottom. The fowler style triggerguard has a wide bow for the curled trigger. The front finial of the triggerguard is surface mounted. The ramrod is fitted with a flared wood tip and does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. The side panel is fitted with surface mounted side plate.

Ignition is sure-fire, thanks to this L&R Queen Anne round faced flint lock. Locks of this design are commonly found on English or American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 to 1770 era. The plate, cock, and other surfaces of original Queen Anne locks were often polished to a bright finish. This lock has been allowed to aged to a speckled patina. This nicely made flint lock has good internals., including a heavy mainspring combines with a well hardened frizzen to produce a shower of sparks. Below the lock the single is properly pinned so that it has good leverage against the sear. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
