This used Chunk Gun, also called and "over the log" gun, is stocked in walnut and trimmed in browned iron furniture. The rifle is assembled around a .40 caliber barrel fitted to a R.E. Davis percussion lock and double set triggers. The barrel is sighed D.J. Arnold No. 61. Weighing in at 13.3 pounds this heavy rifle has a trigger reach of 14-1/4" making it well suited for today's taller than average size shooters.
The .40 caliber barrel is 1" by 47" straight octagon. The barrel has a patent style breech with drum and nipple fitted that add 1" to the overall length. The .40 caliber is rifled with seven lands and grooves. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The rear sight of the barrel is located 11" forward of the breech while the front sight sits 2" behind the muzzle. Both sights are tall, to reduce any heat mirage from the top flat of the barrel.
Stocked in walnut stained and finished to very matte brown. The butt is fitted with a wide, 6" tall, early Pennsylvania style buttplate to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The triggerguard is also a Pennsylvania style with a wide bow and curled grip rail. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek for a right hand shooter. From below the toe is fitted with a long toeplate. The triggerguard is mounted with two screws. The ramrod is mounted through browned iron ramrod pipes. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The side panel is fitted with a lozenge style sideplate finished flush with the side panel. The stock is fairly simple and straight forward with no carving, or decoration.
Ignition is provided by a R.E. Davis J. Henry percussion lock, which is based off Siler internals. The lock is finished to a dark brown and the drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 threaded nipple. The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting. You may cock the lock or set the triggers in any order.
A .40 caliber chunk or "over-the-log" gun for match shooting. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
