This Tennessee Chunk Gun, sometimes called an "over the log" gun. is stocked in a nice piece of maple and trimmed in hand forged iron furniture. The forearm is shaped with an integral anti-cant rest with a browned steel wear plate. The Jim Chambers late Ketland lock has been neatly case hardened. This rifle is used, but has been very well cared for and has few marks on it. Weighing in at 14.9 pounds this heavy rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4" making it well suited for today's average size shooters.
Forming the heart of the rifle is a .50 caliber 1-1/8" by 44" Rice Barrel Company straight octagon barrel. Cut rifled by Rice Barrel Company with six deep radius grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore. Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The rear sight of the barrel is located 12" forward of the breech. The front sight is a Jamestown, North Carolina style with double copper bases with a nickel silver blade. The top flat of the barrel is signed 20 * Alford * 17.
Stocked in maple the wood has a dark brown tone with a hint of figure through the butt. This rifle is assembled without a buttplate in "poor boy" style. Rifles without buttplate tend to display some wear at the heel from use. This rifle has been well cared for and the stock has very few marks on it. The wrist has a long strap tang that extends down the wrist to provide strength, which is ideal on a rifle with such a long heavy barrel. Two bolts pass through the tang into the triggerplate to sandwich the wrist between the steel plates. From below the long toeplate of the rifle can be seen. Held in position by a pair of screws the toeplate is intended to protect the delicate toe when it comes into contact with the ground when loading and cleaning. Further ahead on the gun the long hand forged triggerguard can be seen, also screwed into position in traditional fashion. The ramrod is a split hickory ramrod, which does extend past the muzzle about 2". The ramrod is tapered and has a brass 10-32 threaded tip. This rifle was intended for a match where it must be served by the ramrod on the rifle, which is why it has the extra length. The ramrod is mounted through three ramrod pipes, one hidden below the anti-cant bar. The anti-cant bar is integral with the forearm of the stock and provides a level surface to rest the rifle. The bottom of the anti-cant bar is fitted with a browned steel plate mounted with screws. No muzzle cap is fitted. The side panel is fitted with two individual copper sideplates, one tear drop and one lozenge shaped. The lock panel is well shaped with the upper edge at the quarter flat of the barrel. The buttstock has a square cheek piece.
The Ketland style lock by Jim Chambers is modeled after perhaps the most popular style of flint lock found on fine original antique American longrifles. Assembled on large Siler flintlock internals you can be assured of long life, and easy service, if ever needed. This lock has been attractively color case hardened. Notice the rounded tail and pan of the lock plate. The tail of the lock plate is slightly lower than the raised panel that forms the lock plate, separated by an attractive molding. The raised panel is surrounded by a chamfered edge. The frizzen glides over a roller bearing on the frizzen spring, which is retained by a hidden mounting screw. The Ketland family of lock makers were quick to incorporate the best new features in their rifles, fowlers, and flint locks. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The breech end of the barrel displays a small amount of wear from the frizzen just touching the edge of the barrel flat. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed. The triggers are adjusted so that the lock may be fired set, or unset. The design of this rifle is it intended specifically for range work.
