The Model 1855 Sidehammer revolver is often called the "Root revolver" after Colt designer Elisha K. Root. Historically, 40,000 of these revolvers were manufactured by Colt between 1855 and 1873. This replica revolver was manufactured by the now defunct Palmetto of Italy. The .31 caliber revolver has a five shot cylinder, percussion sidehammer, and one piece walnut grips. This revolver is offered in excellent used condition with a bright clean bore.

The .31 caliber barrel is 5-1/2" from the muzzle to the face of the cylinder. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a small brass post front sight and the top of the action is grooved to serve as a rear sight. The right side of the barrel is marked Black Powder Only Cal .31 Made in Italy. The barrel, action, hammer, and loading lever are all factory polished and blued.

The one piece walnut grips are finished to a medium brown with satin sheen. The grips show no handling marks. The spur trigger is blued and provides a smooth release of the sidehammer. A fairly complex design, the cylinder pin has a plunger release at the front of the action and easily withdraws to remove the cylinder for cleaning. The cylinder pin has a large head with notches that engage a lug in the frame to align each cylinder with the barrel. The five shot cylinder is keyed to the cylinder pin and must be indexed correctly for proper alignment when installing. If you invert the cylinder pin lug with the cylinder it will position the hammer between the cylinders instead of aligning with each cylinder. The five shot blued steel cylinder is fitted with the factory blued steel nipples, which are slightly mushroomed. Order our #PIR-LI nipples designed for a No. 11 CCI percussion cap.
