This handsomely finished Hawken pistol set is the work of the famous custom gun maker, Robert Hannahs, The House of Hawken, Kenosha, Wisconsin. This well made halfstock pistol is stocked in maple, trimmed in iron and nickel silver furniture, and fitted with a H.W. Robbins percussion lock. This pistol comes with a matching three barrel set in .54, .58, and .62 calibers. Each barrel is fitted with a metal ramrod that has a swivel yoke to prevent loss in the field. All three bores are bright and have been well maintained. This pistol has a large grip that fits a man sized hand well when aimed.

The 1" straight barrels are cut rifled in .54, .58, and .62 caliber with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The 10" long barrels are each marked R.S. Hannahs - Maker on the top flat. The left flats are marked with their caliber and all three have the same serial number, 109 stamped near the breech. The low fixed rear sight is an integral part of the tang of the hooked breech. This allows for maximum sight radius on this pistol. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with copper base on the .58 and .62 caliber barrels. The .54 caliber barrel is fitted with an all nickel silver front sight. The barrels are finished to a smooth chocolate brown with a few light scratches from decades of use. A single captured wedge key retains the barrels and is surrounded by nickel silver escutcheons. The key may be drifted to allow the barrels to be removed and interchanged, but is captured to the stock to prevent loss. The hooked breech also allows the barrels to be dismounted for easy cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with black powder residue.

The maple stock has a bag butt profile, with large grip for a man sized hand. The maple stock and pewter nose cap have a few minor dings and handling marks from use. The tang is mounted with tang bolts that engage the trigger plate, sandwiching the grip for strength. The screw slots are neatly aligned with the barrel. The bottom view shows the nickel silver buttcap of the grip, and the browned steel triggerguard. A pewter nose cap protects the end grain of the stock. The ramrod pipe and entry pipe are browned to match the barrel. Each barrel is fitted with a metal ramrod with swivel yoke to prevent loss. The rear end of each ramrod is threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The metal ramrods on the .54 and .62 caliber barrels are smaller in diameter, and we note they will slide out of the stock when the pistol is pointed downward. The single lock bolt passes through a nickel silver tear drop sideplate.

This Hawken pistol is fitted with a H.W. Robbins percussion lock. H.W. Robbins was an early lock maker that offered custom made locks in the 1970's. The lock is finished to match the barrels and has a strong mainspring for fast lock time. The snail bolsters are all fitted with 1/4-28 nipples for No. 11 percussion caps. The single set trigger produced by The House of Hawken does not function correctly, and we were unable to get it to set. Even unset, the trigger still provides a very light and smooth release of the lock.
