This Thompson Center Hawken rifle has the barrel replaced with a longer 31" barrel. The barrel and lock are browned and have a well used appearance. The brass has darkened from long storage. The early production rifle is stocked in American black walnut and has a higher comb than found the later T/C rifles. Trigger reach is 14-1/2" to fit today's taller than average size shooter. Weight is 8.8 pounds.
The barrel is .50 caliber, 15/16" octagon, 31" length. The bore is rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The barrel is finished to a dark brown and has a well used appearance. The front sight is steel bead sight, it has a small daylight gap visible below the dovetail. The rear sight is a non-adjustable peep sight giving it a ghost ring sight appearance. The bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .490" round ball, .015" patch over a charge of 60 grains of GOEX FFg black powder.
The American black walnut stock has scattered small marks from handling. The stock is shaped with the higher comb found on earlier production guns. The buttplate, patchbox, nosecap, and triggerguard are brass, which has aged to a dark patina. The hooked breech of the barrel, which can be dismounted by removing the ramrod and wedge key, for easy cleaning. This early producion rifle has the three hole tang as well as the flush mounted escutcheon plates. A washer style escutcheon plate surrounds the single lock bolt. Further back on the rifle the standard beaver tail cheek can be seen, standard issue on T/C rifles. The ramrod is fitted with brass tips, and the hidden end is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The exposed end has an integral cleaning jag. The ramrod does stick out past the muzzle when fully seated.
The factory color case hardened percussion lock has aged to a dark brown with the front fading to gray. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. Correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension.
The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The ghost ring sight makes it easy to sight. It will serve you well in the woods this Fall or at the range! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
