This CVA Hawken Rifle is stocked in beech that has been coated with a finish to appear as figured walnut. Trimmed in brass furniture, and decorated with brass oval inlays and cap box. This rifle is used with marks that go through the coated stock finish, and a textured patina at the breech. This is the perfect gun to take into the thick brush hunting. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 7.6 pounds.
The .50 caliber barrel is 28" long. The bore has some light scattered pitting visible, you can feel a little roughness with a cleaning patch. The factory blued finish shows handling marks and some textured gray brown patina. The left oblique flat is marked Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. over For Black Powder Only .50 Cal. Spain HAWKEN followed by the serial number. The front sight is a brass blade dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The rear sight is Modena style buckhorn sight dovetailed 7" ahead of the breech.
The beech stock has a scattered handling marks from use and a few of the marks go through to the raw wood below the coating that gives it the appearance of figured walnut. The brass buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The brass cap box is fitted with brass screws. The top view shows the short tang which anchors the hooked breech. Removing the wedge key and ramrod allows the barrel to be removed for easy cleaning. The brass trigger guard is installed with two brass screws. All of the brass has aged to a mellow patina. The synthetic ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threaded cleaning jag. The back view shows the drooping oval cheek piece and the two lock bolts. The lock bolts have a round brass washer-style, surface-mounted side plate.
The Hawken percussion lock has aged to a textured brown patina. The lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, to allow the use of the double set triggers. These triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The lock can be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. The forward trigger can fire the lock, whether set or unset. The lock and triggers function as they should. The drum is fitted with a stainless steel nipple for No. 11 caps.
