This Springfield Hawken was assembled from a kit and is stocked in beech and trimmed in brass furniture. The stock has a few scattered handling marks from use. The bore of this rifle is bright and has been well maintained. This .50 caliber rifle is short, light, and will be handy to carry in the deep woods. The trigger reach is 12-7/8" for today's average size shooter, and this rifle weighs 7.3 pounds.

The .50 caliber 28" by 15/16" straight octagon barrel is rifled with eight lands and grooves, with a slow twist for patched round ball. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech, and a brass blade front sight set in an iron base dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. The bore is bright, clean, and is ready to shoot. Assembled form a kit, the barrel is cold blued and has a few light scratches from use. The left oblique flat is stamped with the factory information and serial number near the breech.

The beech stock is finished to a golden brown with gloss finish. The stock has a few light handling marks from field use. A simple brass buttplate without a comb is fitted to help absorb the recoil from the .50 caliber bore. The short tang anchors the hooked breech, and a color case hardened steel key retains the barrel, for simple cleaning. It is easy to remove the barrel and clean it with hot soapy water, dry, oil, and re-assemble. The oval brass escutcheons that surround the key are mounted with brass Phillip's head screws. The brass triggerguard with grip rail rest and finger spur has developed a mellow patina to match the rest of the brass found on this rifle. A brass forend cap protects the end grain of the stock and acts as the ramrod entry pipe. The brown synthetic ramrod is fitted with a ball puller with .50 caliber jag cover. We note the jag cover extends 1/2" past the muzzle. No cheek is formed on this rifle. The lock is retained with two bolts that pass through simple brass washer style sideplates.

The percussion lock is factory color case hardened. The rainbow of colors are vivid, in good condition. The lock has a strong mainspring for reliable ignition.
