The barrel measures 31-5/8” in length and has a chocolate brown finish with minor wear. Bore diameter is .530” on this rifle, so it is technically a .53 caliber and not a .54 as marked. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. We recommend using a .520” cast round ball, #Ball-520-X, combined with a .010” lubed patch, #OX-10-50-W. This combination should result in good accurate shooting. The full buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 6-1/4" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The rifle is stamped, Allen F.A. MFG. Co. - Santa Fe N.M. on the top flat just behind the rear sight. The side flats are also marked with the serial number, caliber, and various proofs.
Stained a medium brown, the walnut stock has a satin sheen with a few handling marks from field use. Trimmed in iron furniture, the buttplate heel shows some wear, which is typical on this area. Ahead of the comb, the wrist is reinforced by the long tang of the hooked breech system. Two bolts engage the tang and pass through the stock to connect with the long triggerplate below, this system sandwiches the wrist and the resulting strength makes it very hard to break. Two wedge keys retain the barrel, when these are removed, along with the ramrod, the barrel can be lifted out of the hooked breech for easy cleaning and maintenance. The escutcheons for the keys are nickel silver, as is the forend cap.
From below the classic iron toeplate that protects the toe, ending in a beaver-tail finial can be seen. The long trigger bar, anchored to the long tang with two tang bolts, supports and reinforces the wrist. A hard fall from your horse will probably not break this rifle, while you are hunting the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, many days by horseback and keel-boat from Sam Hawken's gun shop in Saint Louis. Strength made the Hawken rifle famous! The sturdy 7/16" hickory ramrod, with brass tip is threaded to accept our 8-32 loading and cleaning accessories. The single lock bolt, and iron tear drop escutcheon, fitted flush with the side panel, are classic features of a half-stock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era. A beaver-tail shaped cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this nice half-stock rifle. The balance point is at the front of the rear sight, for steady aiming.
Cherry Corners Gun Shop, of Lodi, Ohio, recreated this T. Gibbons Hawken percussion lock, for their kit, which later became the Ithaca Hawken rifle kit. Navy Arms acquired these patterns, and the Santa Fe Hawken Rifle was made by the famous Aldo Uberti, of Italy. This is a correct Hawken lock for this fur trade era percussion rifle, with a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The lock is browned to match the barrel. Double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers.
