The .40 caliber octagon barrel is just over 15/16" at the breech with a slight taper toward the muzzle. The .40 caliber bore is rifled with seven lands and wide grooves. The bore has a very slight cone at the muzzle and scattered dark pitting visible over the length. The exterior has aged to a dark brown patina. The breech end displays typical pitting from from the corrosive percussion caps used during the 1800's. The rear sight has a long strap with copper rivets connecting to the base. It is not a good sight design, as it can be easily moved vertically. The front sight a copper blade with integral base.
The maple stock has a scattered marks and a warm patina from handling. There is a crack extending from the breech to the lock mortise. The wood at the breech displays typical darkening from the head from repeated cap flash. All of the brass furniture is very well fitted and has aged to a beautiful mellow patina. The buttplate is narrow with a deep curve in mid-19th century style. The top view shows the tang that extends to the mid-length of the wrist. The wrist has a unfilled hole as-if it had a lollipop tang sight at some point. The barrel is retained to the forearm with a single iron key that passes through brass escutcheons.
The bottom view shows the nickel silver toeplate is secured with two steel screws. The triggerguard has a large bow with a curled grip rail. The triggerguard has a well aged dark olive patina. A poured pewter forend cap protects the end grain of the stock,. Two brass ramrod pipes and entry pipe with thumbnail skirt secure the ramrod. The ramrod is a modern replacement. A brass two leaf sideplate is inlet flush to the stock and is secured with a small nails. The side panel does have cracks extending from the breech through the sideplate and beyond. No cheek piece is carved on the left side of the buttstock.
The back action percussion lock has aged to the same brown patina as the barrel and features some very worn scroll engraving. The hammer has a very small amount of play on the tumbler shank. As with many percussion locks the tumbler has only a single notch, full cock. This simplified lock construction by eliminating the fly detent for use with set triggers. The single lever double set triggers will only fire the lock from the set position. You must set the triggers before you can cock the lock. The drum is fitted with an antique nipple. We did not attempt to remove it.
