The 22" tapered round barrel is .54 caliber. Roll your own paper cartridges, or load this rifle with loose powder after inserting a lubricated bullet. The tapered round barrel is marked Black Powder Only Cal .54 and Armi Sport - Italy ahead of the rear sight. By putting the lock at half cock and lowering the breech block. You can easily see that this rifle has been well maintained, and the bore is bright. The rear of the floating chamber with o-ring can be removed by hand. The front sight is a military style with integral base and the blade has been filed thinner. We also note the thin blade is very slightly tipped to the left. The military rear sight is calibrated with markings to 800 yards.
The walnut stock has some minor dents and dings from handling. The military carbine style buttplate, lock, and action are color case hardened and show nice mottled blues, and purples. The stock is decorated with brass tacks, a $1 coin ahead of the patchbox, a dime in the comb, and the rear side is a coin with a buffalo and copper $1 bank note coin.
Our bottom view shows the lever, and lever latch, a correct feature for this Model 1859 Sharps. The lever, triggerplate and the action are color case hardened. The color case hardened barrel band is mounted with a band spring. Removal of this band often marks the barrel. This carbine shows none of that typical wear.
The big Sharps lock fires a U. S. Musket cap, through the musket nipple. The large percussion hammer reaches over a flash fence, originally converted from a military style Lawrence pellet primer by cutting and slimming the upper edge of the lock plate. We can provide the correct #NW-100 nipple wrench, and a spare nipples, at small extra cost. Order our musket nipple #MMI-I with 8-1mm threads. A heavy duty mainspring drives the big hammer. The lock feels crisp, and works smoothly.
The finger shaped lever, at the front of the action, may be rotated and withdrawn, to dismount the lever and breech block, for easy cleaning. This rifle features a modified gas check. A gunsmith sealed the faceplate to the breech block so it does not float. He then added a bushing with an O-ring into the chamber, which provides for a solid seal to eliminate blow black after discharge.
Used, in good condition, it has a few small handling marks in the stock finish. The bore is clean and bright, with crisp rifling, in perfect condition.
