Stocked in curly maple, this classic percussion halfstock Hawken rifle is trimmed with traditional Hawken iron furniture. The 33" barrel and iron trim are rust browned, to an attractive deep matte finish which helps to eliminate reflections, glare, and mirage while sighting. A classic Hawken hooked breech and two wedge keys retain the straight octagon barrel, allowing instant take-down, for easy cleaning. This rifle is very lightly used with a few handling marks on the stock. The trigger reach is 13-1/4" and this .54 caliber rifle weighs 9.5 pounds.
The .54 caliber Green Mountain 1" straight octagon rifle barrel is cut rifled with a caliber appropriate 1 in 70" twist, ideal for tightly patched round balls. The bore is mirror bright. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The rear sight is a full-buck horn sight, with a wide dovetail base dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a tall nickel silver blade in a brass dovetail base that is fitted to the barrel. Together, these sights work well and look right on this nice Hawken rifle. The quarter flat of the .54 caliber Green Mountain barrel is signed by the maker, J.W.T.. near the breech
The curly maple stock is stained to a dark brown tone, with reddish-gold highlights and brown depths finished to a satin egg shell finish. The stock is trimmed in iron furniture with a classic Hawken crescent buttplate that securely engages your shoulder. The forend is fitted with browned steel forend cap. This percussion rifle is made to accept a sturdy 7/16" tapered ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories.
This top view shows the long tang hooked breech. Two bolts secure the long tang. Notice how the cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. Both tang screws engage the long steel trigger plate, forming a strong steel sandwich that reinforces the wrist from above and below. This was one of Jacob and Sam Hawken's secrets. If a rifle becomes broken, it will most likely be broken at the wrist, the thinnest and section of the rifle stock. The triggerplate and tang reinforce the wrist, strengthening this critical area, making the Hawken rifle reliable, durable, and famous. The beaver tail toeplate protects the pointed toe, often in contact with the ground while loading. The wedge keys extend just past the opposite oval escutcheons. Notice the typical beaver tail cheek rest, double set triggers, and single lock bolt fitted to a recessed steel escutcheon, all classic features of an 1840 era Hawken rifle. It balances nicely in your hands, for offhand shooting.
The L&R percussion Hawken lock has been browned to a smooth finish. The lock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, all nice internal features. Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire the lock set, or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence. The trigger plate is very long, extending through the wrist, accepting two tang bolts from above. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
This Hawken rifle is well fitted, and ready for use in the field. It will serve you well. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
