The polished and browned barrels are 26" long including the breech plugs. A rectangular silver overlay signed by the builders D. Johnson and J. Cannon is found in the center of the breech plugs. The breech end of the barrels are also decorated with inlaid bands of silver. The front sight is a brass bead and the rib is textured to reduce glare. The right barrel is cylinder bore with a .557" bore diameter at the muzzle and the left barrel has an improved modified choke that measures .540" at the muzzle. We recommend our #WAD-28-A passed through on edge then flipped. Use a #OX-WAD-54-W felt wad that can pass through the choke without damage. The thin 28 gauge overshot card #WAD-28-B is flexible enough to pass through the choke. Both bores are bright, but we note the right bore has scattered deep pits running throughout. We also note two small dents near the muzzle on the side of the right barrel, but they are not visible inside the bore.
The straight grip is finely checkered for a secure hold. The buttstock is fitted with a wide polished steel buttplate to help absorb the recoil from the 28 gauge bores. The top view shows the comb of the buttplate is engraved with a floral pattern. All of the iron furniture has a faux color case hardening that was done with a torch. The tang and bolt are both neatly engraved and finished in the same faux color case hardening. The bottom view shows the engraved iron triggerguard with long grip rail and nickel silver front finial. The forend has a single key that retains the barrel surrounded by engraved nickel silver escutcheons. The key allows for quick disassembly for cleaning. Simply withdraw the ramrod, close the frizzens, press out the key with firm thumb pressure, and lift the muzzle end, to dismount the barrels for easy cleaning. The nickel silver entry pipe is neatly engraved. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a nickel silver shotgun style loading tip, but no tip for threaded accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-29-10 to service this double shotgun. A beaver tail cheek is shaped on the left side of the buttstock for right hand shooters.
Ignition is provided by the L&R John Bailes flint locks. The plates, cocks, tumbler screws, and top jaws are neatly engraved. Polished and finished with the same faux color case hardening found on the rest of the shotgun, the lock plates have distinctive English styling. Tuned for best performance, the locks spark well, and put a shower of sparks in the pans. We recommend our 5/8" knapped flints, #FLINT-AMBER-5, for use with these locks. The direct drilled touch holes in the Nock's Patent breeches are positioned well above the bottom of the pans. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The triggers provide a smooth release of their locks.
