This early flintlock pistol is sometimes called an English Lock, or more commonly an English Dog Lock. This lock has the addition of a dog, or catch, to secure the cock. This design would date to the late 1600's and early 1700's and was eventually replaced by the true flintlock. This pistol was hand made by contemporary builder Leonard Day & Sons, and is marked on the breech of the barrel. Weight is 2.0 pounds and this pistol points naturally when aimed.

Fitted with a 13-1/2" tapered octagon-to-round smoothbore barrel, the .56" bore is bright, clean, and has been well maintained. The barrel transitions from eight to sixteen flats before abruptly turning round to the muzzle. The polished bright barrel has random brown speckling and is signed Leonard Day & Sons on the top flat. No sights are fitted on this point and shoot pistol.

The walnut stock is finished to a medium brown and has a few small handling marks. The flared grip has a slender profile that flares slightly at the lock panels. The lock panels and the forearm have very slender proportions. The bottom of the grip is carved with a floral design and the edges are wrapped with an iron band. The polished steel triggerguard is surface mounted, with a screw securing the grip rail. An inverted tang bolt passes through the front of the triggerguard and engages the taper tang of the breech plug from below. One ramrod pipe, no entry pipe supports the correctly tapered ramrod. The ramrod has no provisions for threaded accessories, in antique fashion. An iron band wraps around the forearm just behind the muzzle. The lock is retained with three domed head lock bolts surface mounted to the side panel.

The bright finished doglock is assembled from The Rifle Shoppe castings and neatly engraved with a floral pattern on the plate, cock, and dog latch. In addition to the half and full cock tumbler positions, the lock also has a dog catch to secure the flint cock. The dog can be positioned to engage the notch in the rear of the hammer and will correctly drop away when the lock is brought to the full cock position. The single trigger is pinned to provide a smooth release of the lock. The direct drilled touch hole is well positioned on the side of the barrel. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This doglock pistol has a nice feel and balance when held in the aiming position. A doglock pistol would have been used by highwaymen, travelers in coaches, riders on horseback, servants who were guards, pirates, gentlemen adventurers in the new world, and dragoons.
