This flintlock belt pistol features a maple stock, stained to a medium-brown, and trimmed in brass furniture. The .54 caliber smoothbore octagon-to-round barrel has a bright clean bore that is ready to shoot, and this pistol is fitted with an L&R John Bailes flintlock. The brass furniture was not fully polished and shows many small file marks, and we note some light streaks in the gloss stock finish. The grip is comfortable for a man's size hand and this pistol points naturally.

The .54 caliber smoothbore octagon-to-round barrel is 8" long and is finished bright. The barrel is octagon the first 3" with a single wedding band transition before turning round to the muzzle. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel shows polishing marks left from the build process. No sights are fitted, and none are expected on this style of close range pistol. A fire blued tang bolt passes through the straight tang to engage the small brass trigger plate below. A single pin retains the barrel to the forearm. We note a slight gap between the back of the breech plug and the stock.

The maple stock is stained to a medium-brown with gloss finish. We note streaks and rough textured spots in the finish. A round brass inlay decorates the top of the grip behind the tang. The pistol is fitted with a brass triggerguard with acorn finial, a typical English theme meant to symbolize the strength of English oak and of England. The tapered wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 accessories. The ramrod is retained with brass pipes with ringed ends. We note many small file marks in the brass furniture. The side panel of the stock is fitted with two small brass washer style sideplates to accept the domed lock bolts.

Finished to a dull blue to contrast the barrel, the L&R John Bailes flintlock has a crisp action and a well-hardened frizzen. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. A stainless steel vent liner is positioned a bit forward of the center of the pan. The handmade trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.

This flintlock pistol is offered as new and will be a joy to shoot at the range. It would also make a fun project, and with a little polishing, this pistol would really shine.
