This Schuetzen rifle is made for offhand match shooting. It features a Oregon Rifle Works .40 caliber 1-1/8" octagon barrel. The rifle is fitted a Lyman No. 17 globe front sight, the rear tang sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation. The figured walnut stock features some raised carving and is trimmed with brass furniture. Trigger reach is 13-3/4", intended to be held close, with the Schuetzen style buttplate hooked over your shoulder and under your armpit, for very steady offhand shooting. This target rifle weighs 12.6 pounds, for offhand Schuetzen matches, where the weight makes the gun steady.
The .40 caliber Oregon Rifle Works barrel has a cut rifled bore with a 1 in 48" twist. The bore is bright in as-new condition. The barrel is finished to a silvery gray with bright cut engraved scrolls on the muzzle, upper muzzle flats, upper breech flats. The front sight is a Lyman No. 17 sight and includes a set of inserts. The rear tang sight appears to be hand made and is elevation and windage adjustable.
Schuetzen matches were a popular sport in Germany as well as America in the late 1800's. Some clubs now sponsor Schuetzen events in the spirit of these old time makers and shooters. Fired offhand, the Schuetzen rules allow the special buttplate, double set triggers, and aperture tang sight. Every effort is made to provide a steady rifle for offhand use. The buttplate comb is hand engraved and the engraving extends down the sides of the buttplate. The cheek is offset to provide the shooter with a comfortable rest. The tang sight is securely mounted to the long straight tang. The forend of the rifle is fitted with a palm rest. The forend is fitted with a ebony black forend cap. The rifle has no provision for a ramrod, which is very common on Schuetzen rifles.
This Schuetzen Rifle is fitted with L&R's late English flintlock. This 1820 to 1830 era flintlock has a silvery gray undertone that matches the finish on the barrel. This flintlock features a waterproof pan with drains on either side. The frizzen spring has a roller bearing, for fast lock action. Both features found on late flintlocks. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The stainless touch hole liner brings the main charge very close to the priming flash. This vent is perfectly centered over the pan, correctly positioned to find the hottest center of the ignition flash. The single lever double set triggers are tuned to fire from the set position only. You can set the triggers, or cock the lock in any order, but the triggers must be set to fire this rifle.
This highly decorated off-hand rifle is intended for offhand use. The lock, barrel, and furniture are all fitted and finished with hand engraved accents. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
