This classic golden age era fullstock flint rifle is socked in curly maple with figure from muzzle to butt. The stock is fitted with a large brass patchbox with delicate hand engraved designs. The large Siler flintlock is fitted to a Colerain 42" swamped octagon barrel and double set triggers that fire set, or unset. Weighing in at 8.4 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.
The 42" length .45 caliber cut rifled barrel is light weight at the muzzle end, due to the taper and flare of the swamped octagon barrel. The thick breech makes the barrel very strong. The thin waist saves weight, and the muzzle flares to bring the front sight to the same sighting plane as the rear sight. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. We note the rear sight dovetail has some visible black epoxy used to secure the rear sight.
This elegant flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass furniture. Originally burnished bright, the furniture has acquired a natural mellow patina from storage. Shaped with the angular lines of York and neighboring Lancaster County, Pennsylvania the buttplate wide, tall, nearly flat for comfort with full loads. The patchbox is decorated with delicate fine line hand engraving with flowing scrolls and a rooster's head with the mounting screw as the eye. The head design could also be interpreted as the mythical cockatrice, which mythology describes as killing with just a look - fitting for a longrifle. Correct steel screws are used to mount the brass patchbox and hardware. The patchbox door has a cam over center spring, with finger relief cut at the buttplate to lift the door. Beneath the door is a correctly hand cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The stock is decorated with incised caving around the flared tang, flanking the cheekpiece, and behind the ramrod entry pipe. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The flush mounted sideplate is hand engraved. The cheek is fitted with a hand engraved nickel silver hunter's star.
The large Siler flintlock has a Germanic influence with panels on the pan and a pointed tail with vertical filed molding. The lock has been finished to a dark brown. The lock sparks well and throws a shower of sparks in the pan. Use a 3/4" knapped flint for best performance in this lock, The vent is perfectly centered and positioned well above the pan, to serve as a window on the center of the heat of priming flash. The finish at the breech of the rifle shows a small rub mark from the frizzen.
The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
