The heart of this rifle is a .50 caliber swamped Colerain octagon barrel. The 42" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle to align the sights. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. The .50 caliber bore is bright and ready to shoot. The exterior of the barrel is finished to a light gray-brown. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is located 11" forward of the breech, while the brass blade front sight with brass base is located 2" behind the muzzle.
The curly maple stock is finished to a honey brown with golden undertones. The stock has some minor inletting gaps and the shaping is only fair. Small file marks can be seen in the brass furniture and it stands proud of the wood in some places. The wide flat brass buttplate will help spread the felt recoil from the .50 caliber bore over a large area. The comb of the buttplate is decorated with five flats. The buttstock is fitted with a large sliding wood patchbox with raised lip at the base. Compress the spring at the base and slide the patchbox toward the buttplate to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other accessories. The flared tang of the breech plug is secured with a tang bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. We note the tang stands proud of the wood. Two small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm, and we note a large repaired chip around the forward pin on the left side of the stock. The forearm stops 1-1/8" short of the muzzle and no muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain.
A short brass toeplate with decorative finial is secured with three small brads to help protect this area of the stock that is often damaged during loading. The brass triggerguard is secured with pins, and we note it stands proud of the stock with a larger inletting gap at the front of the guard. The front triggerguard pin hole was miss-drilled and can be seen running out on the bottom of the stock. The wooden ramrod passes through two brass pipes with octagon flats and matching entry pipe with a long rounded skirt. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip. The tip is not threaded to accept cleaning or loading accessories, and we recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this rifle. No cheek is formed on the buttstock. The large brass sideplate is retained with two domed bolts that secure the lock.
This rifle is fitted with L&R's American Classic flint lock that has been polished bright. Turned bearing surfaces on the tumbler and sear minimize friction, and improved cock geometry allows a shorter stroke, with better sparks thrown squarely into the pan. The frizzen shows only a few marks from use, and we recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The fire blued trigger provides a smooth release of the lock. The stainless steel vent liner is centered, but positioned well above the pan. We note the vent hole is visible above the frizzen when it is in the closed position.
