This early 18th century style holster pistol has a Dutch or possibly French influence to the design. The pistol is stocked in black walnut and features a 14-1/4" octagon-to-round .62 caliber smoothbore barrel. The barrel, lock, and iron trim are all finished armoury bright with some light patina from age and use. This pistol is neatly shaped with well fitted parts.
The octagon-to-round barrel is 14-1/4" long, 62 caliber smooth bore. The bore is bright. A brass blade sight is soldered behind the muzzle. and a very low rear sight is integral to the breech plug tang. It was very common for late 17th and early 18th century military pistols to not have sights, where the pistol was designed for use by a mounted troop at close range.
Not highly decorated the black walnut stock has simple raised lock panels, as well as a molding along the ramrod channel and raised molding along the bottom of the forearm. The bottom view shows the cast steel butt cap, triggerguard and single ramrod pipe. The stock does appear to have some bedding on the langets, which may have been done to stabilize a small crack extending from the right hand side langet. The trigger is set into an oval steel trigger plate. The flared grip, domed butt cap and light weight make this pistol very comfortable to hold and aim. The lock is retained by two dome headed screws. The steel side plate is flush mounted into the wood. the ramrod is tapered and fitted with a steel end cap to protect the end grain. The ramrod has no provisions for threaded accessories in period fashion.
The flint lock has a delicate hammer, round-faced lock plate, and no pan bridle in early 18th century flintlock fashion. We recommend a 7/8 by 1" flint for use in the lock. The lock has a smooth action and sparks well. The breech is drilled with a direct drilled vent hole. The trigger is pinned high to give this pistol a smooth trigger release.
A fine early 18th century holster pistol. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
