1740 era Prussian Dragoon Pistol,
62 caliber smoothbore, 14-1/2" barrel,
flintlock, walnut, brass,
used, by Leonard Day
This 1740 era Potzdam Pistol is stocked in walnut and trimmed in brass furniture with a bright finish on the lock and barrel. The buttcap is fitted with a lanyard ring to prevent loss by a mounted trooper. The grip is nicely angled and this large pistol points well. The pistol was neatly assembly by the late contemporary builder Leonard Day from parts by The Rifle Shoppe. The pistol is not signed on the outer surfaces.
The 14-1/2" tapered round barrel is turned from solid stock .62 caliber with a .615" bore. The barrel is fitted with a brass front sight soldered behind the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted, which is correct for a military style pistol designed to be used at close range. The barrel has a direct drilled vent hole. The bore is bright with a few frosted appearing areas near the breech end.
The flared butts tapers into the slender wrist, which is fitted with an engraved oval thumbpiece. Lock panels taper widest at the rear, in early flintlock fashion, and are framed with a raised molding along the edges and flared tang of the breech plug. The brass buttcap is secured with a diamond shaped buttcap retainer. A turned stud with lanyard ring is offset from the buttcap retainer. The brass triggerguard is mounted with a pin and screw. Raised moldings frame the front and rear of the tapered lock panels. An additional raised molding surrounds the ramrod entry pipe and the ramrod channel. The tapered ramrod has a flared brass tip with no provisions for threaded accessories in antique fashion. The forend has a raised molding along the ramrod channel. The brass sideplate is secured with two domed head lock bolts and a wood screw to secure the tail.
The flint lock is assembled from castings molded from an antique pistol. This early Germanic lock has a slight banana shape, octagon pan without pan bridle, and decorative moldings filed across the tail. The lock plate is engraved POTZDAM MANAZ. This pistol sparks very well and we recommend our 3/4" knapped flints for use with this pistol. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear
This pistol is used with a very mellow patina. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
