This Virginia style longrifle is stocked in maple with a hand scraped finish. The iron buttplate is wide and flat to best spread the recoil over a large area. The .54 caliber Rice Barrel Company swamped octagon barrel is 44" in length, finished to a silvery brown. The Chambers' assembled Dale Johnson lock is mated to L&R double lever double set triggers. Assembled by Lowell Haarer this rifle is numbered 74. and is signed "Sparky" on the top flat of the barrel. This very utilitarian longrifle appears to be lightly used with some marks on the frizzen face. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit todays average size shooter, and the rifle's total weight is 8.4 pounds.

The rifle is fitted with a 44" swamped octagon .54 caliber barrel. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven deep round bottom grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Rice barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.

After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The barrel has been draw filed and finished to a silver gray brown. The breech end is signed L. Haarer No. 74 on the left quarter flat, and "Sparky" on the top flat. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 12" ahead of the breech. A brass blade front sight is fitted behind the muzzle.

The maple stock is stained a brown, and rubbed back to best reveal the figure. The stock is very neatly shaped with slender lock panels that taper widest at the rear in early long gun fashion. The stock has a hand scraped finish that is visible as the rifle is rolled in the light. The lock, iron furniture, and barrel are all browned to contrasting silvery brown color. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the recoil. The buttplate is finished with five flats and a wedding band. The triggerguard has a wide open bow for the double lever double set triggers. The triggerguard is mounted with pin and screw in early longrifle style. The bottom view shows the iron Virginia style triggerguard, with long grip rail. No toeplate is fitted, instead the toe of the buttplate stands just above the wood to provide a small amount of protection.

The rifle does not have an entry pipe and the forend is squared in a style you commonly see or "poor boy" rifles. Two plain ramrod pipes secure the 3/8" diameter ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads on the hidden end. The muzzle end of the stock is protected with a poured pewter muzzle cap. . The side panel is fitted with a steel sideplate that fills the side panel in Germanic style. The square cheek is shaped with a molded edge.

The rifle is fitted with a Jim Chambers assembled Dale Johnson flintlock. The Dale Johnson lock plate is the approximate size of a large Siler but features a 1/8" drop in the tail and a banana base line curvature reminiscent of the Transition period. The pleasing lines of this lock transition into the wrist of the rifle in a very graceful manner. Fitted with the Chambers' Golden Age tall flint cock and tumbler on this lock plate, this lock has comparable speed to that of the famously quick Chambers' Late Ketland. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The L&R Lock Company double lever double set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

The longrifle displays a small of wear on the finish at the breech, which is normal from firing and cleaning.
