This antique English double barrel percussion shotgun is stocked in walnut and trimmed in iron furniture. Both locks are marked EDWARD MIDDLETON, who worked on Aston Road in Birmingham, England in the middle of the 19th century. The barrels, locks, and furniture have aged to a silvery-brown patina. The stock has scattered handling marks, typical of firearms that have been handled for 100+ years. The serviceable 11 gauge bores have pitting running throughout, but are still shootable. Modern nipples have been installed on this shotgun. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and 12-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 10.7 pounds, and this massive shotgun was probably originally used for duck hunting.

The 11 gauge Laminated Steel barrels are 34" long with pitting running throughout. The bores are still very shootable, the right barrel measures .768" and the left barrel measures .751" at the muzzle. We suggest our 11 gauge wands and cards for this shotgun. The barrels have aged to a silvery brown patina. The ribs are solid with no loose solder. A brass bead is set in the rib 1/2" behind the muzzles. The bottom of the barrels are both stamped 11 and marked with late Birmingham, England proof marks. The rib is marked LAMINATED STEEL near the breech.

The walnut stock shows scattered dings and scratches from over a century of handling and use, but has no cracks, chips, or repairs. The checkering at the wrist and forearm is still in good condition. An iron shotgun buttplate is fitted to the stock with a short border engraved comb. The buttplate stands proud of the stock due to wood shrinkage over the years. The long tang of the hooked breech is decorated with a small amount of border engraving. A nickel silver oval inlay decorates the center of the toe in the buttstock. The triggerguard bow has a small amount of scroll engraving and is retained with three engraved screws. No cheek is carved on the stock, allowing it to be shot by a right or left handed shooter.

A single wedge key passes through nickel silver escutcheons inlet into the forearm of the stock to secure the barrel. The wedge key is captured to prevent loss. Removing the wedge key allows the hooked breech barrels to be removed from the stock. A long border engraved skirted iron entry pipe and two iron ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib secure the wooden ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip on the muzzle end and the opposite end remains blank. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-36-10 to service this shotgun.

The percussion locks are marked EDWARD MIDDLETON, and have the same silvery-brown patina as the furniture and barrels. The lock plates are decorated with light engraving. The locks have not been altered and the hammers align at the half cock and full cock notches. Both locks securely engage their half and full cock notches. The nipples are both modern hardened steel replacements to accept No. 11 percussion caps. The triggers provide a smooth release of their locks.

This massive side-by-side muzzleloading shotgun has a wonderful warm patina. It would look great hanging above the fireplace or on the wall of the hunting cabin.
