The Colt brand second generation .44 caliber Model 1860 Colt Army revolver is beautifully finished, with a 8" blued round barrel, polished blued cylinder, color case hardened frame and loading lever, blued steel back-strap and brass triggerguard, and reddish brown walnut grips. This revolver is in excellent condition with a bright well maintained bore. The cylinder latch points have a few small marks from having the cylinder spun and cocked, as well as a very faint drag line. The wedge key shows a few marks in the blue finish from disassembly. This used Colt brand second generation revolver does not have the black factory box. This revolver is cased with a Pedersoli powder flask, bullet mold, and nipple wrench.

The walnut grips are neatly finished with the classic reddish brown tone found on Colt revolvers. This is the Army issue style 1860 Colt, with the so-called four screw frame, cut to accept the Cavalry shoulder stock, which quickly attaches to convert this revolver to a carbine, for use by mounted troops. Notice the tiny notch cut in the recoil shield, and the fourth screw in the frame, which stands proud of the frame, to engage the shoulder stock. The shoulder stock is available separately, from others.

The Colt second generation revolver is marked COLT'S PATENT U.S. on the color case hardened frame, and ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA on the top of the polished blued barrel. The left side of the triggerguard is marked 44 CAL and the brass has developed a dark patina from storage. The loading lever is color case hardened steel, with a secure spring loaded retaining latch. The tip of the loading plunger will accept a round ball, or conical bullet. The cylinder is roll engraved with a naval battle scene and still has the factory nipples installed. We recommend our #PTC-PI steel nipples for No. 11 CCI percussion caps as replacements.

We recommend the .454" round ball, a tiny bit larger than the factory recommended .451" round ball. This larger ball gives better compression, and seems to shoot cleaner. Despite your best efforts, this revolver will need to be cleaned after 12 or 18 shots. Remove the wedge, barrel, and cylinder. Wipe the face of the cylinder, and wipe the cylinder pin. If you continue to load and fire a badly fouled revolver, the effort needed to cock and fire the gun will become greater, causing the small internal hand, spring, and cylinder latch to become worn and slightly damaged. Continued abuse will cause the cylinder and latch to become out-of-time. Simple cleaning and maintenance will prevent problems.

This revolver comes in display case that measures 15" long, 6-1/2" wide, and 2-1/2" tall. The case is covered with a black synthetic leather that has an antique look and feel. The red fabric lining is dirty with wear spots from years of use. The key for the brass latch is included with the case. A reproduction Colt style powder flask, bullet mold, and nipple wrench by Pedersoli of Italy are included in the case.

This Colt brand revolver is a good value and comes with a display case. We don't see many Colt Second Generation revolvers offered in trade. Prized by collectors, this pistol was made to be a precision shooter. This is a fine piece ready to be added to your cap and ball revolver collection. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
