This is an 1840 - 1850 vintage design, known as a box-lock action. Rugged and simple, original gun makers such as the famous Edwin Wesson used the box lock action in their best rifles. This rifle has a brass action, with a walnut buttstock and brass forearm. The triggerguard and buttplate, with long hook on the toe, are also made of brass. A Dixie Gun Works brass scope with brass mounts is fitted to this rifle. All of the brass has developed a wonderful warm patina from years of use. Weighing in at 10.8 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 12-1/2", set up with today's shorter size shooter in mind.

The .50 caliber barrel is 32" length, 1" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright, however it does have some visible machining marks from manufacturing. The exterior is finished to a silvery brown. This rifle is equipped with a fixed 4 power telescopic sight, made in Japan for Dixie Gun Works, it is an example of the earliest of the rifle scopes. The front brass mount is fitted over the front sight dovetail, and the rear mount is fitted directly behind the rear sight dovetail. The rear mount is screw adjustable for elevation. Two small set screws on the font mount allow you to slide the clap left to right in the mount for windage adjustment. The barrel is stamped 50 Mowrey Olney, Texas on the right oblique flat near the breech. The left oblique flat is stamped with the serial number.

Stocked in black walnut, the buttstock is finished to a brown with a golden undertone. The stock has many handling marks from use. We note a 1" crack extending forward from the buttplate in the center of the toe. The brass buttplate has a long lower hook to engage the shooter's shoulder. The brass forearm is screwed to the barrel with two brass screws. The triggerguard has a threaded boss, which is screwed into the action. The tail of the guard is retained by a brass screw mounted into the stock. The brass ramrod pipes are attached to the bottom flat of the octagon barrel. No under rib is used in this design. A 3/8" wooden ramrod serves the bore. The ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip, but is not threaded to accept cleaning or loading accessories. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 hardened steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. Internally very simple, the tumbler has a set screw to control the trigger engagement in the full cock position. The single trigger currently requires a firm pull to release the lock.
