The .50 caliber 1" octagon by 28" barrel is finished to a streaky gray-brown. The .50 caliber bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The bore has a slow twist for use with a patched round ball. The barrel is fitted with a blued bead front sight and elevation and windage adjustable rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a wooden ramrod with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
Assembled from a kit, the beech stock is stained to medium brown with reddish undertone. We note random runs in the semi-gloss finish. The router line from the factory around the cheek was not sanded and blended into the stock. The stock has many handling marks from field use. The brass has aged to a dark patina. The triggerguard has a large bow with finger spur and offset grip rail. A beaver tail cheek is shaped for a right hand shooter. The lock bolts pass through two simple brass washer style sideplates.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The Hawken percussion lock is color case hardened. The rainbow of colors are vivid, in good condition. Internally the lock features a tiny internal screw, cleverly arranged to adjust sear engagement in the full cock notch. The lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, to allow the use of the double set triggers. These triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The lock can be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. The triggers can fire the lock, whether set or unset. The breech is fitted with a stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps.
