This percussion halfstock rifle is stocked in curly maple, and trimmed in a mixture of iron and nickel silver furniture. The rifle is fitted with a mule ear percussion lock, double lever double set triggers, and a .50 caliber barrel. This rifle is offered in used condition, with a well maintained bore. Weight is 9.3 pounds and the rifle has a trigger reach of 13" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.
The .50 caliber 30" barrel is 1" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with six lands and wide grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is finished to a chocolate brown and is signed P. Sheets 36 behind the rear sight. The finish has light scratches and small dings from field use. The barrel is fitted with a browned iron blade front sight dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle and a flat top rear sight dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech.
The maple stock has nice curl throughout and is stained an amber brown with gloss finish. The stock has only fair shaping, inletting, and finishing, with a few small dings from normal use. The buttstock is fitted with a nickel silver crescent buttplate to engage the shooter's shoulder in 19th century style. A browned nose cap protects the end grain of the stock. The straight tang of the breech plug mounts with one domed tang bolt that engages the trigger plate below, the rear is a wood screw. A small steel pin retains the barrel to the forearm. The toe of the rifle is fitted with a wide browned iron toeplate with beaver tail finial mounted with three steel screws. The nickel silver triggerguard bow has a finger spur, and the rear of the grip rail has a curled spoon. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip, but is not threaded for loading accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-36-10 to service this rifle. The ramrod passes through a browned iron entry pipe and two iron ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib. A large beaver tail cheek is formed on the left side of the buttstock and the single lock bolt passes through a simple washer style nickel silver sideplate.
The Mule Ear or Sideslapper percussion lock by L&R allows the percussion nipple to be mounted directly into the barrel. Pull the hammer outboard to cock the lock. Unlike some mule ear locks, this lock has both a half cock and full cock position on the tumbler. The lock plate is polished bright and the hammer is as-cast. A hardened steel 1/4-28 percussion nipple for No. 11 cap is screwed directly into the side of the barrel. The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide a very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
This halfstock rifle is used, with a well maintained bore that is bright and ready to shoot. It will be perfect to carry in the deep woods on your next big game hunt. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
