This original bayonet has a wonderful patina. Produced from approximately 1874 to 1885, the "Gras" bayonet was the last of the French sword type bayonets. The spine of the blade, which is flat, is marked with the armory and date of manufacture, in this case 1878. The blade has a speckled brown patina and the finish has worn off the walnut grips. The internal latching mechanism works nicely, this bayonet would surely lock up on an 1874 French Infantry rifle. The bayonet first saw use in French Indo-China in 1874 and remained in French service until the early days of World War One.
A great bayonet with a wonderful patina to add to your collection.
