One of the first rifles designed by the famous John Moses Browning, of Utah, Winchester purchased his patent, and manufactured their popular Model 1885 Winchester Single Shot Rifle, more widely known as the High Wall Winchester. This rifle is chambered in caliber .45-90 WCF with a special order 36" long barrel. The shootable bore is bright, with only a few areas of light pitting. The walnut stock has the original finish, with a small crack on the tip of the forearm. The iron furniture and barrel exterior have aged to a brown patina. This rifle was manufactured in 1905 and qualifies as a modern firearm due to the production date. We have this rifle on display, ready for same day shipment on receipt of your funds, and your favorite dealer's signed FFL copy. We must deliver to a Minnesota resident, or to a licensed dealer in any other state. Trigger reach is 13-1/4" and this rifle weighs 9.9 pounds.
The 36" octagon barrel tapers from 1-1/16" at the breech to 7/8" at the muzzle. The exterior has aged to a brown patina with a few minor dings. The shootable bore is bright with only a few areas of light pitting. A thin blade front sight is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. A replacement step adjustable rear sight from a Marlin rifle is dovetailed so it sits 2-3/4" ahead of the action. The top flat is stamped Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. / New Haven Conn. U.S.A. Patented October 7. 1879. in two lines and 45-90 W.C.F. just ahead of the breech. The Winchester proofs marks are found on the barrel and the top of the action near the breech.
Stocked in walnut, the stock retains its original finish. The stock has many small dings and marks from over a century of handling. The top of the left side of the forearm has a 2" crack extending back from the Schnabel style tip. This classic shaped tip is fitted with its original ebony insert. The buttstock has developed a dark stain near the buttplate, which is heavily textured from being stored on a damp floor. The tang is drilled and tapped for an antique Lyman peep sight that is no longer fitted to the rifle. The filler screw for the tang sight is missing. The tang is stamped Pat. Oct. 7th 1879. / -Winchester- / Trade Mark in three lines. The lower tang is stamped with the serial number 101XXX. Our back view shows that this rifle has no cheek, and no cast off, creating perfect symmetry that is equally well suited to the right or left hand shooter.
The factory bluing on the action has aged to a brown patina. The action works smoothly and properly. The hammer is pushed through half-cock and to full-cock during operation of the action. The half-cock position is safely engaged and will not allow the rifle to be fired. The single trigger provides for a smooth release.
Originally designed by John Browning, this Winchester has a shootable bore and will make a nice addition to anyone's collection. The extra long 36" barrel makes this original Winchester unique. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
