The browned .54 caliber 9-3/4" octagon barrel is cut rifled with five narrow lands and wide grooves with a slow twist for shooting patched round balls. The low fixed rear sight, is an integral part of the tang for the hooked breech. This allows for maximum sight radius on this pistol. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a copper base. We note some scratches in the brown finish around the front sight. The top flat of the 15/16" octagon barrel is signed J. F. Bergmann. The left oblique flat is stamped .54 near the breech. Two wedge keys retain the barrel, and the hooked breech allows the barrel to be dismounted for easy cleaning.
The maple stock has a bag butt profile, with checkered grip. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. We do note a very small check that has developed at the front of the lock mortise and wrapping around the edge of the lock panel. The stock is trimmed in browned steel furniture to match the barrel. Our bottom view shows the rounded butt of the grip. The pistol is fitted with a 3/8" diameter ramrod, fitted with a single steel tip, threaded 10-32 for your shooting accessories. A tear drop shaped sideplate surrounds the single bolt that retains the lock on the opposite side.
The R.E. Davis Ketland style flintlock is browned to match the finish of the barrel and furniture. A highly refined and complex lock, this design incorporates many of the features invented by London's best gunmakers during the late flint period, prior to 1830. The “full waterproof pan" is made with rain gutters cut to drain any water away from the pan. The cock's jaws have been tipped down to throw sparks directly into the pan. The erect frizzen snaps over a roller bearing on the end of the frizzen spring, which is retained by an inside screw threaded into a blind hole in the bullet shaped spring finial.
Close inspection shows the adjustment screw of the single set trigger, located behind the trigger. Pushing the trigger forward sets it for a light release. The trigger may be set before or after the lock is cocked. The stainless steel vent liner is directly above the center of the flash pan, high enough to serve as a window on the hottest part of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
