The .50 caliber octagon-to-round barrel is 31" in length. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The exterior blue finish has a few scattered handling marks from firing and cleaning. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a blued iron base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The rear sight is step-adjustable and is dovetailed so it sits 4-1/4" ahead of the breech. The dovetail was cut between the factory rear sight mounting screw holes. The holes have filler screws in them and the rear sight covers both holes for a clean classic look.
Stocked in American black walnut, the stock is has some attractive figure on both sides of the buttstock. The stock is fitted with a factory installed rubber recoil pad with T/C logo in the center. The triggerguard has a wide bow for the single trigger. Our top view shows the hooked breech and tang. The factory installed front tang bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger assembly below. The rear wood screw was replaced with a tang bolt that passes through and engages the rear of the trigger assembly. This strengthens the wrist and helps prevent breaking or cracking. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. We note the key as been captured to prevent loss in the field. Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. A black anodized aluminum ramrod is drilled and taped on both ends to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
The percussion lock is color case hardened, with factory engraving. It features a fly detent, for smooth lock action, and a powerful coil mainspring, for fast lock time. The breech is fitted with a hardened steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. The single lock bolt is retained in a blued steel escutcheon, to match the other blued steel furniture. The triggerguard is wide to accept a gloved finger when hunting in colder weather. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
