The 9" swamped round brass pistol barrel is marked with view and proof marks on the left side of the breech, and London on the top flat that fades from the breech plug into the barrel. The .60 caliber bore is dark and rough. The exterior of the barrel has been cleaned to a bright finish. No front or rear sight was fitted. The breech end of the barrel has a small repeating arrow design along the breech. The iron breech plug tang is engraved with a border and a flower in front of the tang bolt.
Stocked in English walnut, the stock has a crack along the ramrod channel that extends up through the ramrod pipe and back 1-1/2" into the left side of the forearm. The stock has many marks from over two centuries of handling. The wood along the top of the barrel channel and around the thumbpiece is lighter due to the chemical used to clean the brass. The top view shows the lock panels gently taper widest at the rear. The thumbpiece is decorated with a line of border engraving. The rest of the brass retains its original mellow antique patina.
Our bottom view shows the tapered wooden ramrod, and the rod pipes and triggerguard, all made of brass. The ramrod fits snugly, and is original to this pistol with is iron worm and brass tip. The trigger bow has been lightly engraved, as has the forward finial. The brass grip cap is also border engraved and is retained with a single screw. The sideplate, with its two lock bolts, has been inlet flush with the stock and has a single line border of engraving around its edges.
The lock is a delightful example of a late English flint lock, with engraved lock plate and graceful goose necked cock. The lock has a strong mainspring, a smooth trigger release, and secure half-cock and full-cock notches. The lock has aged to a dark brown patina throughout. The W. Ketland & Co. is clearly visible on the center of the lock plate.
