This antique cavalry pistol has early 19th century European military styling with a large round faced flintlock and square pommel with lanyard loop. Pistols of this design appear to have been made primarily for export and date from well after the adoption of percussion by most European countries. This pistol has a Belgium proof mark on the left side of the barrel. We have examined many examples of this style of pistol and they often have Middle Eastern markings. The pistol has no provision to accept a ramrod and was likely intended for mounted use and the ramrod was likely secured to the saddle. The barrel is secured to the walnut stock with a captured wedge through square brass escutcheon plates. The stock has developed a crack extending back from the muzzle cap through the bottom of the forearm.

The 9" tapered round barrel has aged to a dark grayish-brown with deep pits on the exterior. The left side of the barrel has a Belgium proof mark. The bore measures .680" and is dark with pitting running throughout. No sights are fitted in military style where the pistol was meant to be used at close range. There is a chip behind the rounded tang of the breech plug.

The buttcap with heavy duty lanyard loop is loose and is mounted with only one replacement brass screw. The grip under the buttcap is filled with epoxy. The back of the grip has a 1/2" chip and the front is cracked from the butttcap to the grip rail of the trigger guard. A strap would have been mounted to the pistol to prevent the trooper from dropping the pistol. This pistol has no provision for a ramrod. The side panel is fitted with two small washer style inlays that mount the lock bolts. The walnut stock has many scattered handling marks. The bottom of the forearm has a 4-1/2" crack that extends back from the brass muzzle cap. The brass trigger guard and buttcap are both stamped with a half moon proof mark.

The flintlock has a round faced lock plate with a rounded pan. The lock has a dark aged patina with pitting. The lock does function, but is a weak sparker. We note the frizzen screw threads have worn and the screw will back out when the frizzen is closed and opened multiple times. The barrel has a direct drilled vent hole.
