The 14-1/4" long brass barrel is about 12 gauge, or .73 caliber. The left side of the breech has British view and proof marks from the London proof house. The barrel has a 2" flared trumpet at the muzzle with wedding band decorative ring. The breech is ringed to match the muzzle and there is an additional step down at the mid-point of the barrel. The brass bore is dark with a visible texture from use and age. A single tang bolt passes through the slightly flared steel tang and engages the trigger plate below. Two iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
Stocked in European walnut, this blunderbuss is trimmed in brass furniture. The stock has many marks from two centuries of handling. A crack in the ramrod channel runs from the muzzle to the ramrod pipe. The right side of the forearm has a repaired crack that extends from the muzzle back 4" and up the the barrel channel. The left side of the forearm as streaks in the finish that ran down from the chemical used to clean the barrel. The buttplate is large and nearly flat to help spread the recoil from the large bore. The comb is engraved with a floral design. The right half of the buttplate was cleaned bright, and the left half still retains its original mellow patina. The wood along the buttplate on the right side of the stock and along the comb was bleached lighter from the chemical used to clean the brass.
The bottom view shows the long brass trigger guard with shell finial. The long grip rail and bow are border engraved. A wooden ramrod tapers to a wide flare at the muzzle with a fitted brass tip. The original iron worm is found on the opposite end of the ramrod, we note it is not secure and can be easily removed. The ramrod passes through one brass ramrod pipe and one engraved entry pipe. The side panel is inlaid with a brass sideplate that is border engraved. The two large lock bolts engage the lock on the opposite side.
The flat faced lock has a speckled gray patina from age. The lock plate is hand engraved with a border and signed by the maker ARCHER. The cock and tumbler screw appear to be later replacements. The flint cock is very loose on the tumbler and has lots of play in all directions. We note the lock will not go into the full or half-cock notches. The small iron trigger has developed a dark brown patina.
