This large game rifle blends modern and classic English Sporting Rifle design. This well fitted rifle is stocked in a figured walnut and trimmed in browned iron furniture. The flintlock is mated to a 8 bore, or 83 caliber, octagon-to-round barrel. This large caliber should be more than adequate for any game in North America. The rifle was manufactured by October Country and is signed on the top flat at the breech. The rifle appears to be as-new with only a single strike on the frizzen face. Trigger reach is 14", and this rifle weighs 11.8 pounds.
The 8 bore, or .83 caliber, barrel is 31" octagon-to-round. The bore is rifled with seven narrow grooves with wide lands and a very slow twist of 1 in 144". The barrel is fitted with a nickel silver blade steel base front sight behind the muzzle. The bore is bright in as-new condition. A flat top rear sight with a single folding leaf for extended range shooting is fitted 9" ahead of the breech.
The figured walnut has swirls of pattern. The wrist and forearm are neatly checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The architecture of this sporting rifle goes back into the 1800', showing just how much influence the English had on modern rifle and shotgun design. The buttstock is fitted with a spacer and rubber recoil pad. The wrist of the rifle is finely checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The express rifle style triggerguard has a large bow to provide easy access to the single trigger. The forearm of the rifle is fitted with a black horn forend cap. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip and the opposite end fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads for accessories. The flared tip engages a notch in the rib to secure it during recoil.
The rifle is fitted with a hooked breech to allow for easy cleaning without risk of wetting the stock. Place the lock at half cock and close the frizzen, remove the ramrod, drift the wedge key clear of the under lug and the barrel can be lifted out of the stock. Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The large flintlock is finished to a dark brown to match the barrel and furniture. This English style flintlock has a strong mainspring, and smooth crisp feel. The stainless steel touch hole liner brings the main charge very close to the priming flash. This vent is perfectly centered over the pan, correctly positioned to find the hottest center of the ignition flash. The trigger has a high pivot point to provide good leverage against the sear.
