Known as the Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, the term "Navy" indicates that it is .36 caliber. Issued by the United States Historical Society this 1851 Navy revolver is decorated with a inlaid gold Florentine engraving design in the style of a 1851 Navy Colt presented to Robert E. Lee by Samuel Colt. The steel frame and barrel were highly polished and finished to a dark blue. The cylinder is engraved with stars around the cylinder mouth, Napoleon cannon used by Confederate forces, Arlington, Lee's home, the Lee family crest, Robert E. Lee mounted on Traveler , and the McLean House, scene of surrender ceremonies.
This presentation grade revolver has a French style cherry case with a Confederate gray velvet lining. The case includes a engraved cap box, silver plated Dixon powder flask, six gold washed round balls, and a sterling silver Robert E. Lee medallion.
The top view shows the 7-1/2" blued octagon barrel with brass bead front sight. A notch in the hammer, serves as a rear sight. In addition to the engraved LEE the top of the barrel and quarter flats are inlaid with gold laurel wreaths. The bottom view shows the blued loading lever, wedge key, and the highly polished and gold plated brass triggerguard and grip strap. The walnut grips are finished reddish brown. The sideplate of the barrel is engraved and gold inlaid with three stars to indicate the rank of general. The walnut grips are inlaid with a gold coin with the profile of Robert E. Lee.
The French style cherry case has a inset leather and gold panel on the top. The case measures 16 1/4" wide, 10-3/4" tall, by 3-1/4" deep. The interior is lined with light gray colored velvet. The box comes with a James Dixon Company of Birmingham England silver plated Colt style powder flask. The silver plate has darkened from long storage but could be cleaned with traditional silver polishing materials. A small cap box engraved R. E. Lee is stored in the lower compartment. The upper compartment contains six gold plated round balls. A inset contains a sterling silver medallion of Robert E. Lee with the opposite side showing Robert E. Lee on Traveler. A pair of white gloves the paperwork and original shipping box (not shown) are included.
