This used .50 caliber Thompson Center Hawken percussion rifle is ready to shoot. This factory assembled rifle is stocked in American black walnut, with brass furniture, and 28" barrel. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The stock has very few handling marks and a crack near the toe. This rifle has been fired and the hammer and bolster display some gray brown patina. Weight is 8.3 pounds, and with a trigger reach of 14 inches, the rifle is perfectly setup for today's average size shooter.

The barrel is .50 caliber, 15/16" octagon, and 28" length. The factory bluing has some areas of scattered speckling and discoloration at the breech around the nipple but otherwise is in excellent condition. The front sight is Thompson Center's blued steel bead sight. The rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. The bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .490" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 70 grains of GOEX FFg black powder.

The rifle is stocked in black walnut with a small amount of figure near the toe and trimmed in brass furniture. The stock is finished to a medium brown with satin sheen. The stock has a few minor handling marks with the majority on the side panel. The toe has a crack in line with the lower buttplate screw. The furniture has started to acquire a mellow patina from age. Our top view shows the tapered comb and the two hole tang of the hooked breech. The hooked breech allows the barrel to easily be removed for cleaning. Simply press out the brass wedge key, using thumb pressure, and remove the ramrod. Then lift the muzzle end, to unhook the breech plug from its tang. Remove the nipple, and insert the breech end into a bucket of hot soapy water, for easy cleaning. Our bottom view shows that the brass triggerguard is starting to develop a patina. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip and the rear brass tip has 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The beaver tail cheek provides a nice rest for a right hand shooter. The single lock bolt passes through a simple brass washer style sideplate.

The percussion lock is factory engraved and color case hardened. The hammer has discolored to a gray brown patina from use. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for a No. 11 caps. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather.
