The .50 caliber barrel is 15/16" octagon, 28" in length. The bore is rifled with a 1 in 48" twist to shoot both round balls and maxi balls with reasonable accuracy. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The exterior barrel finish has a very few scattered brown speckles on the top flat between the breech and rear sight. The barrel is fitted with a blued steel bead front sight and Thompson Center elevation and windage adjustable rear sight.
The walnut stock has a satin finish with some minor handling marks. This early production gun has the tang pre-drilled to mount a Thompson Center peep, or tang sight. The triggerguard and buttplate have a mellow patina from age. The buttstock is shaped with a large oval cheek rest. The factory ramrod is fitted with brass tips and 10-32 threads for accessories.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, close the frizzen, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The color case hardened flint lock is factory engraved. The rifle is fitted with the factory saw cut flint. We recommend our best 5/8" hand knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5 for best performance in this lock. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather.
