1851 Colt Navy Revolver
.36 caliber, 7-1/2" barrel,
percussion, unfired, highlighted engraving,
late brown factory box, by Colt ~ Second Generation

This .36 caliber revolver does not appear to have been fired. Obviously it must have been cocked or disassembled to highlight the engraving. The cylinder has a few small marks from the cylinder latch. The wedge does not display any marks. The grip is made from a single piece of walnut, with the classic reddish Colt coloration. Our top view shows the blued steel cylinder and 7-1/2" octagonal barrel. The barrel markings have been highlighted with white ~ ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY ~ on the top flat. A small bead front sight is fitted, and the rear sight is a notch in the hammer to maximize sight radius. The left side of the barrel has one small brown spot 2-3/4" behind the muzzle. The bottom view shows the color case hardened loading lever. This Colt Model 1851 has the square back triggerguard. The color case hardened frame is marked Colt's Patent below the front edge of the cylinder, this has also been highlighted with white. We note the frame has a very few small marks in the color case hardening behind the recoil shield on both sides of the frame.
If you decide to fire this revolver, the factory recommends .375" round balls, and each chamber will hold 30 grains of FFFg powder. We recommend 21 grains of GOEX FFFg powder, and a .375" round ball, for best accuracy and best compression. Cover each ball with a small amount of our #LUBE-SPG bullet lubricant grease.
Despite your best efforts, this revolver will need to be cleaned after 12 or 18 shots. Remove the wedge, barrel, and cylinder. Wipe the face of the cylinder, and wipe the cylinder pin. If you continue to load and fire a badly fouled revolver, the effort needed to cock and fire the gun will become greater, causing the small internal hand, spring, and cylinder latch to become worn and slightly damaged. Continued abuse will cause the cylinder and latch to become out-of-time. Simple cleaning and maintenance will prevent problems.
