Constructed circa 1990 by Brian Anderson this is a lovely example of a Tennessee “Poor-Boy” style flint lock longrifle. Stocked in a relatively plain piece of American black walnut, the rifle is trimmed in a very limited amount of iron furniture all of which has been browned to match the barrel and lock. With an overall weight of 7.6 pounds the poor boy styled rifle has a trigger reach of 14", perfect for today’s average to larger sized shooters.
The .45 caliber Green Mountain cut rifled barrel measures 42" by 13/16" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 60" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking for best accuracy. The barrel has been draw filed smooth and finished to a even plumb brown tone. A steel blade front sight is soldered directly to the top barrel flat. The face of the sight has been painted orange for visibility. muzzle. A long base rear sight is dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech. The rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" forward of the breech. The rear sight is short flat style with a square notch.
Stained a dark brown the walnut stock is fairly plain, nor is one expected on this utilitarian longrifle. The rifle is in very good shape, the stock has only a few handling marks from normal use while the metal finishes show almost no wear with the slight exception of the muzzle and the narrow grip rail of the triggerguard. Note that no buttplate has been installed on the rifle, a feature common with poor-boy style rifles. Forward of the comb the wrist sweeps up to meet the long tang breech plug. Secured by two bolts the tang helps to strengthen the wrist by sandwiching it between the triggerplate below and tang above. Finished a dark chocolate brown the tang blends smoothly into the barrel. Only an iron triggerguard has been placed on the base of the gun, no buttplate protects the rear and no toeplate protects the toe. The simple Tennessee style guard is screwed into position and finished brown, note the bit of wear on the guard just behind the triggerbow, the result of normal handling. The tapered wooden ramrod is held in place by a pair of plain iron ramrod pipes, no entry pipe has been used on the gun. The hidden end of the ramrod does have a brass tip and is threaded 8-32 to accept your cleaning and loading accessories. No muzzlecap has been fit on the gun, leaving the end grain at either end of the rifle exposed; this is a common feature on poor-boy rifles, in fact it is a major identifying trait. No sideplate has been used on the gun, as is traditional. Note the shallow cheek of the rifle, gently protruding from the stock.
Ignition for the rifle is provided by this large Siler flint lock. Properly tuned and assembled the lock has a heavy set of springs and well hardened frizzen to ensure fast and reliable ignition. Finished a dark brown the lock neatly matches both the barrel and the stock. Here we did note a slightly unique feature that we do not commonly see. In order to obtain tapered lock panels that begin wide at the rear and narrow as they move forward, Mr. Anderson has soldered an extension to the breech. This extra thickness has been installed on the flat that the pan rests against and the touch hole has been drilled through it. The addition runs from the fence at the rear of the pan to just forward of the frizzen where it ends, allowing the lock to sit at a slight angle and accomplish the desired lock taper. Below the lock a set of double lever double set triggers are ready to fire this rifle. Correctly installed and adjusted the triggers can be set in before or after the lock is cocked, or they can be fired from the unset position. The vent from flash pan to main charge has been directly drilled.
This .45 caliber longrifle has a modest weight, snappy Siler lock, and walnut stock. The frizzen shows only a modest amount of use and the bore has been well maintained. This rifle will be a joy to shoot at the range or in the deep woods. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
