Known as the Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, the term "Navy" indicates that it is .36 caliber. In all actuality, the U.S. Army bought more of the 1851 Navy Model revolvers than the U. S. Navy purchased. Notice the color case hardened steel frame. Unlike less costly revolvers made with a brass frame, this revolver has the rugged steel frame, and will handle full loads for years. The revolver is offered in near-new condition with a bright clean bore that is ready to shoot. This revolver comes in the factory box, and includes an extra cylinder.

The action is crisp, and the cylinder locks very tight. Trigger release is smooth and as light as the factory dares to make it. The 7-1/2" blued octagon barrel, is unmarked on the top flat. The Black Powder Only - .36 Cal. and F.LLIPIETTA - Made in Italy warnings and manufacturer markings are stamped on the right and left barrel flats. A pointed brass bead front sight is mounted near the muzzle. A notch in the hammer, serves as a rear sight. This revolver has the rugged steel frame, and will handle full loads for years, without the tendency to wear prematurely. The loading lever is color case hardened steel, and the triggerguard and backstrap are brass. The walnut grips are finished reddish brown, mounted in Colt style, made of one piece of walnut.

The factory recommends our #BALL-375 pure lead .375" round ball, but many shooters prefer the slightly larger #BALL-380-X ..380" hand cast round ball, which provides better compression, noticeably more power, and best accuracy. However, an oversize ball tends to shear lead at each chamber mouth, changing the size and bullet weight, a problem. This revolver has slightly chamfered chamber mouths. If your revolver shaves lead, slightly polish each chamber mouth with fine emery and a marble, until the ball seats fully, compressing the lead instead of shearing it. Both cylinders are fitted with the factory blued nipples. We recommend replacing the nipples with our No. PIR-LI best 6-. 75mm thread hardened steel, which are designed to accept CCI No. 11 caps.

Disassembly for cleaning is easy. Drive the wedge key out of the barrel, using our brass wedge key punch. Slide off the barrel, and cylinder. Wipe down the frame and grip, but avoid disassembly. It is wise to completely strip and clean the action about once per year, using a well fitted screwdriver, made to fit the small screws. Remove the nipples with our #NW-140 wrench, and wash the barrel, nipples, and cylinder with a bottle brush, in hot soapy water. Dry the parts with a cloth, or rinse them in boiling water, and apply oil. Apply a touch of Birchwood Casey's Choke Tube Lubricant to the threads of the nipples, before re-installing them. This anti-seize will prevent the nipples from becoming stuck due to powder fouling.

This revolver is offered in near-new condition in the factory carton and comes with an extra cylinder. It will be a joy to shoot at the range. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
