When viewed from above the 9" long .50 caliber barrel can be seen. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. Fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 2-1/2" forward of the breech, the barrel also has a nickel silver blade front sight set in an iron base dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The barrel is marked on the left hand flat Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. along with a black powder warning, caliber stamp and serial number. The breech end of the barrel is fitted with a hooked breech to allow easy cleaning. Simply press the key out, remove the ramrod and, with the lock in the half cock position, lift the barrel out of the stock. This allows for quick cleaning of the gun and makes maintenance that much easier.
The beech stock has been finished an orange brown and has a few minor handling marks. Our bottom view of the pistol shows the polished bright iron triggerguard, held in position by two screws. The poured pewter forend doubles as a ramrod entry pipe. Originally polished bright, it has aged to a dull gray. The ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip and the rear tip has 10-32 threads for cleaning accessories. We would suggest using a larger diameter pistol cleaning and loading rod for maintenance, see our #PL-7-50. The long polished bright iron belt hook also serves as the sideplate for the rear lock bolt. A simple iron washer style sideplate surrounds the front lock bolt.
Ignition is provided by the factory supplied percussion Maslin lock. Lightly engraved the lock has been color case hardened and has a strong mainspring. When combined with the properly pinned and tuned trigger, the lock has fast time and will ensure a quick ignition. The percussion drum is fitted with a stainless steel 6-1mm threaded nipple for No. 11 percussion caps, order our #CVA-S if you need a spare. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
