The .50 caliber barrel is 32" long. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. An adjustable rear sight sits 7-1/2" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight with an iron base is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The brown finish on the exterior of the barrel shows light scratches and marks from use. The left oblique flat is stamped .50 Cal / Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. / Black Powder Only / MADE IN U.S.A. near the breech.
Stocked in maple stained to a light orange brown, the stock has minor handling marks. There are gaps in the fitting of the buttplate to the stock. The nickel silver capbox is has a cam over center lid that opens and closes securely. The capbox was never well polished and shows marks from being polished in two directions. The wood around the toe stands proud of the plate, and the tip of the toe has been cracked all the way through the stock and replaced with a different piece of wood that is finished darker than the stock. The steel triggerguard has been browned to match the barrel and is shaped with a finger spur and curled grip rail. The pewter nosecap also serves as an entry pipe. The percussion lock is secured with two lock bolts with small inlet washer style sideplates. The oval cheek piece is shaped to be comfortable for a right hand shooter. Two wedge keys retain the barrel, which is fitted with a hooked breech to allow for easy cleaning.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the keys past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. The rifle is fitted with a wooden ramrod with brass tips. The front tip is threaded 8-32 and the rear is threaded 10-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories.
The Maslin style percussion lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, to allow the use of the double set triggers. The lock features a tiny internal screw, cleverly arranged to adjust sear engagement in the full cock notch. The double lever double set triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The triggers are currently adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Unset the front trigger requires firm pressure. Once the rear trigger is set the front trigger is very light. The drum is well supported by the lock plate and fitted with a stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps.
