The .64 caliber smooth bore round barrel is 8-3/4" long, tapering from the breech to a narrow waist and gently flaring at the muzzle. The bore is bright, but does have scattered pitting running its entire length. A 2" long rib extends forward from the breech on the top of the barrel. The forward section is inlaid with gold and the rear is engraved LONDON. The rib tapers to a point and transitions into a chiseled mofit. The left side of the barrel is stamped with a crown over P, over * over RW, over a crown over P. The breech end of the barrel is neatly border engraved. A small bead of silver solder was added directly behind the muzzle to serve as a replacement front sight. The top of the breech plug is slightly dished to help with sighting. However, a modern high dome tang bolt prevents sighting through the dish, we believe the ordinal tang bolt would have been flat. The short pointed tang is engraved with a floral pattern. The barrel is fitted with a hooked breech that allows the barrel to be easily removed from the stock. Two replacement iron keys retain the barrel to the forearm, and pass through replacement nickel silver oval escutcheons.
This pistol was restocked in walnut that has been stained dark and finished to a satin sheen. The original iron parts have developed a speckeled brown patina. The top view shows the pointed tang is surrounded with raised carving. A chiseled iron thumb piece decorates the top of the grip. The lock panels correctly taper widest at the rear in early flintlock fashion. Viewed from below, the iron grotesque buttcap and triggerguard are modern replacements. The original ramrod entry pipe has a pointed skirt that is neatly engraved. The forward pipe is a replacement. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a flared iron tip. Seen from the back, the front lock bolt is a replacement, while the rear is original. The iron sideplate is chiseled with a martial theme and includes swords, cannons, banners, and a suit of armor.
The round faced lock is signed Wiilson under the pan. This English locks feature an exterior pan bridle and sliding safety, an advanced feature for the period. The safety automatically engages when the cock is pulled to the full-cock position. The safety must be pulled back completely before releasing the cock. The cock is chiseled with the same design found on the sideplate. The top of the pan, fence, and bridle are plated with gold. The vent is directly drilled, and is positioned slightly forward of the center of the pan. The side of the barrel around the vent is also plated with gold. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
The neatly chiseled iron furniture contrasts well with the dark walnut stock on this pistol.
