This Thompson Center Hawken rifle is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore. The rifle is fitted with Thompson Center's Vernier tang sight and globe front sight. This early production Hawken is stocked in figured American black walnut with evenly spaced stripes running its entire length. The brass has darkened from long storage. Trigger reach is 14-1/2" to fit today's taller than average size shooter. Weight is 8.2 pounds.
This rifle includes the following accessories: Lyman .490 single cavity round ball mold with handles, T/C factory blued bead front sight (we note the back is painted white), five extra inserts for the globe sight, T/C nipple wrench, T/C combo wedge puller/nipple wrench, three assorted replacement stainless steel nipples, new brass wedge key, and used jags, worm, ball puller, and fouling scraper. Also included new in the T/C factory packaging: two jags, ball puller, fouling scraper, and two packs (100 count each) of dry round shooting patches. A handmade wooden loading rod and a separate wooden cleaning rod with jag are included. All accessories are for a .50 caliber.
The factory polished blued barrel is .50 caliber, 15/16" octagon, 28" length. The barrel is finished to a dark blue and has a few light scratches and scattered spots of brown speckling from use, mostly near the breech. The front sight is Thompson Center's tall globe sight. The barrel mounted rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. The globe sight is too tall to use with the barrel mounted rear sight. A Thompson Center Vernier tang sight is installed for target shooting, and adjusts for both windage and elevation. In excellent condition, the bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .490" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 60 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. This rifle pre-dates the QLA muzzle and the bore is rifled all the way to the end of the muzzle.
The figured American black walnut stock has evenly spaced stripes running its entire length on both sides of the stock. This is an early production Hawken with high buttstock comb, flush mounted sideplate and escutcheons, and one screw nose cap. The stock has a few small marks from normal handling. We do note three small hairline drying cracks extending back from the rear of the trigger guard. The buttplate, patchbox, nosecap, and triggerguard are brass, which have aged to a dark mellow patina from long storage. Our top view shows the hooked breech of the barrel, which can be dismounted by removing the ramrod and wedge key, for easy cleaning. The Vernier tang sight is mounted to the early producion three hole tang. A flush washer style sideplate surrounds the single lock bolt. Further back on the rifle the standard beaver tail cheek can be seen, standard issue on T/C rifles. The wooden ramrod is fitted with brass tips, and the hidden end is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. We note the ramrod extends 3/8" past the muzzle.
Our lock view shows the color case hardened percussion lock, factory engraved by Thompson Center. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. A stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is installed. Correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early.
This Thompson Center Hawken is in excellent used condition with a bright well maintained bore. It is fitted with a globe and Vernier tang sight for target shooting.
