This Model 1885 Winchester High Wall Rifle has been restocked in nicely figured walnut, and is fitted with a 29-1/2" full octagon Ron Long barrel with Ron Long Vernier tang and globe sight. The rifle is unsigned but it attributed to Ron Long of Denver, Colorado. The rifle is chambered for .40-65 Ron Long cartridges and the bore is bright. One of the first rifles designed by the famous John Moses Browning, of Utah, Winchester purchased his patent, and manufactured their popular Model 1885 Winchester Single Shot Rifle, more widely known as the High Wall Winchester. The trigger reach is 14" and this rifle weighs 11.6 pounds. Due to the 1905 production date of this action it qualifies as a modern firearm and FFL rules apply.

The 29-1/2" octagon Ron Long barrel is 1-1/8" at the breech with a gentle taper toward the muzzle. The barrel is chambered in caliber .40-65 Ron Long, which was developed by Ron Long with a slightly longer cartridge case for long range black powder cartridge shooting. The bore is ..400" with .406" grooves and is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend using black powder cartridge loads in this barrel for best accuracy. The barrel exterior is finished blue and has a few small handling marks from use. The muzzle end has a slightly recessed target crown. The barrel is fitted with a spirit level wind gauge front sight, no rear sight was ever fitted to the barrel.

This rifle is stocked in figured walnut, and the buttstock and forearm are stained and finished a nice reddish brown tone with low gloss finish to best display the figure. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. The wrist and forend are neatly checkered, and the wrist is shaped with a pistol grip with attractive shape and ebony inset. The steel buttplate smooth and comfortable when shouldered. The checkered forend has a Schnabel shape at front with ebony inset.

The action, lever, and hammer are color case hardened. The lacquer over the color case hardening does display some wear when rolled in the light. The lever works smoothly, and the extractor is positive. The hammer is cocked to full-cock as the action is opened, and the set triggers function correctly. The lower tang is stamped PAT. OCT. 7. 79 in two lines, along with the serial number. The 5" tall Ron Long Vernier tang sight has 3" of elevation adjustment and has windage adjustment on the base. The tang sight will also fold backwards to a horizontal position and rest above the comb of the rifle for storage.

This single shot rifle is ideal for the serious black powder cartridge reloader who wants to reach out and knock down targets at long distances.
