The . 50 caliber 41-3/4" long barrel is 1-1/8" straight octagon by John Carpenter. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with a 1 in 72" twist with eight narrow lands and wide grooves for a patched round ball. The previous owner reports good success with a .495" diameter ball over 100 grains of black powder with 0.018" thick shooting patches. The barrel is finished to a smooth brown and does have one rub mark 13" ahead of the action. A Lee Shaver No. 17A front sight with spirit level is fitted behind the muzzle. The action is fitted with a peep sight with elevation adjusted on the staff. The windage adjustment scale is marked on the top of the sight. Loosen the eye disk, move the sight, and tighten to secure it in position.
The curly walnut stock is finished to a light brown and finished to a satin sheen. The buttstock is shaped with a cheek piece for a right hand shooter. Trimmed in steel, the buttplate is checkered with a gentle curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. No forearm or ramrod pipes are fitted since this rifle was only intended used was as a target rifle.
This ingenious action is very simple, with few moving parts, typical of Yankee Ingenuity from this period. The hammer spur has deep checkering for a secure hold when cocking and releasing the hammer. The triggerguard also acts as the mainspring. The mainspring is very strong to provide sure fire ignition of the No. 11 cap. The nipple is fitted inside an integral flash cup to direct cap spray away from the barrel. The hammer strikes the nipple, which is screwed directly into the breech end of the barrel, providing direct ignition into the powder chamber, with no turns. The nipple has a 1/4-28 thread.
