This nicely finished replica Remington Model 1858 Revolving Carbine is .44 caliber, in blued steel. This revolving carbine appears to be in as-new condition but does not have the factory carton. The 18" octagon barrel is fitted with a blade front sight with an integral dovetail base. A "Rocky Mountain" style rear sight is installed on the barrel. The frame of this revolver carbine is not notched like the 1858 revolver, since the notch in the frame does not serve as a rear sight. The rear sight is mounted 5" in front of the cylinder face and has five-step adjustments. The semi-buckhorn has a nice square notch cut on center. Remember that when firing this carbine, you cannot rest your arm in front of the cylinder, or else your hand might be sprayed by the gases exiting the gap between the cylinder face and barrel. The other hand engages the front trigger spur.
The factory recommends a .451" round ball, but we strongly prefer the slightly larger Hornady .454" round ball, which provides better compression, noticeably more power, and the best accuracy. However, an oversize ball tends to shear lead at each chamber mouth, changing the size and bullet weight, a problem. This revolving rifle has slightly chamfered chamber mouths. If your revolver shaves lead, slightly polish each chamber mouth with fine emery and a marble until the ball seats fully, compressing the lead instead of shearing it.
The walnut stock is factory finished with a medium gloss varnish and mounted with a blued steel screw through the tang. The stock has a small number of figures available. The traditional brass trigger guard is polished to a burnished satin finish and only slightly tarnished from normal handling. When the loading lever is lifted, the maker's stamp can be seen. The rifle is marked CAL. .44 BLACK POWDER ONLY - A. UBERTI ITALY. The best feature of this well-fitted revolver is the action, which is smooth, crisp, and positive. The trigger release is light and sudden, with no creep or motion.
The polished cylinder has the Remington safety notches cut between each nipple recess. Pull the hammer to half-cock, turn the cylinder to align the safety notch with the hammer nose, and set the hammer into the notch. You can safely carry this revolver with all six chambers loaded if you rest the hammer in a safety notch. The cylinder is fitted with the factory nipples, which are designed for Italian caps. We recommend replacing them with our #PTC-PI 12-28 hardened steel nipples for No. 11 CCI percussion caps.
Order it for a ten-day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for a same-day refund. Postage is your only risk when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
