The .58 caliber tapered round 39" barrel is rifled with narrow lands and wide grooves with a progressive depth, exactly like the original musket. The barrel has a distinct flat at the breech, which makes a smooth transition to the tang. Markings can be found on both the tang and the rear of the barrel, a crown over the letters BP. Nicely polished and blued, the blue black finish is near perfect, with only a few handling marks. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. It will make a fine shooter, for hunting, or military musket competition. Clean it after use and this fine musket will last a lifetime.
The correct Enfield ladder style military sight is marked for elevation. Many used military muskets were cannibalized by their owners, and fitted with inappropriate adjustable sights. Not so here. This correct rear sight makes this rifled musket legal for NMLRA as issued military musket matches. The top of the barrel is marked PARKER HALE LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND. Decades old, this fine musket is a nice example of their workmanship. No longer made in England, the older Parker Hale muskets are prized by shooters.
Enfield muskets were imported and issued by both the North and the South. The Confederacy purchased Enfield muskets from neutral England, and brought them into the south, at great risk, aboard the blockade runners. Stocked in English walnut the stock has the original factory varnish finish. The stock has a few small handling marks. The buttstock reveals the classic circular cartouche, on close inspection. This is the maker's inspection mark, stamped in the center of the buttstock, exactly as found on original Enfield muskets. The brass buttplate, triggerguard, and muzzle cap, are retained with blued steel screws, as original. The buttplate is perfectly matched to the stock profile. The three barrel bands are also blued. Notice the sling swivel at the front of the bow, for your military sling. The forward sling swivel is mounted to the front barrel band. No sling is included. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet flush into the stock, and counter bored to accept the lock bolts.
The color case hardened lock has the classic Enfield percussion hammer. The hammer is nicely engraved with a border, and checkered at the thumb spur. The lock plate colors are nice, bright, and well mottled. The lock plate is engraved with a simple single line border, and stamped 1853 ENFIELD, a crown (indicating ownership by the Crown), and the initials PH. This replica Enfield rifled musket is fitted with a correct 5/16-18 threaded Enfield musket nipple, exactly as on the original. We can supply a similar 5/16-18 threaded nipple for standard #11 caps, but we prefer the larger musket caps, since they are easier to press on the nipple. Order our #NW-100 nipple wrench.
These early rifles are fitted and finished much better than the current production Parker Hale rifles made in Italy. This nice used Enfield musket will be appreciated by a Civil War reenactor. Both sides prized the English Enfield musket. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
