The heart of this Germanic rifle is the .54 caliber swamped octagon barrel. Measuring 31” in length from breech to muzzle, the barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist and flares at the muzzle. Cut rifled with seven round bottom lands and grooves, with a slow twist, ideal for patched round ball. The bore is bright and clean inside, ready to shoot. The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and flat top rear sight dovetailed 6-1/4" ahead of the breech. The barrel finish has a scuff mark ahead of the rear sight.
The claro walnut stock displays some figure through the buttstock and has reddish undertone. The stock has a few small handling marks and has developed a crack at the to toe, very near the bottom buttplate screw. The crack is visible on both sides of the stock. A large sliding wood patchbox is installed in the buttstock. The door has a domed head spring catch inlet into a groove in the back of the door to apply pressure. The lid slides easily to the rear, and rests securely in place when closed. Below the lid is a deep cut cavity. The buttstock flows into a stout wrist that is inlaid with a nickel silver wrist inlay mounted with a brass screw. Lock panels taper widest at the rear following the taper of the swamped barrel. The tang has a case hardened appearance.
From below the rounded toe of the stock can be seen tapering forward toward the triggerguard. No toeplate has been installed on the rifle leaving that section of the stock unprotected. The Germanic style brass triggerguard of the rifle has been screwed into position in the rear and is pinned forward. The ramrod is held in place by two brass ramrod pipes, one entry, one forward. The 5/16 wooden rod has a brass tip that is threaded 8-32 to accept you loading and cleaning accessories. The stock does not have a muzzle cap.
The rifle is fitted with a R,E, Davis flintlock in the style of John Twigg. The lock plate is shaped with a rounded pan and shaped with a molding across the tail. As you cock this lock, the long swivel link tucks under the tumbler arm, minimizing the trigger effort needed. This gives the lock a light release, increasing in speed through the stroke, due to increasing leverage. The frizzen tightly covers the pan. The mainspring has a floral finial and a smooth snappy action. The tumbler and sear are spaced slightly off the bridle and lock plate's inner surfaces by integral bearings. This “frictionless" design became a popular feature on later English locks. We recommend our 7/8" knapped gun flints FLINT-ENG-7. Fast ignition is assured by the vent, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The late Walter Cain double lever double set triggers will only fire from the set position. You may cock the lock before or after setting the triggers.
