This classic muzzleloading rifle is fitted with a .50 caliber by 32" barrel, with 1 turn in 60" twist, and deep rifling grooves, ideal for patched round ball target and hunting loads. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a steel blade front sight and Lyman's non-adjustable rear sight. The barrel is factory blued, and the top flat is marked - LYMAN - MIDDLEFIELD, CONN - near the breech. The diagonal flats are marked GREAT PLAINS RIFLE .50 along with the black powder warnings, serial number, and proof marks.
The walnut stock is finished to a medium brown. The buttstock is fitted with a classic plains rifle steel buttplate to securely engage the shooter's shoulder. All of the steel furniture is factory blued. Our bottom view shows the classic iron toeplate, with beaver tail finial, and the iron triggerguard. Both are shaped in the classic style of the Hawken brothers, of Saint Louis. This rifle features a correct iron ramrod entry thimble, and nose cap. The oval cheek rest is raised to support the shooter's cheek. A Hawken style hooked breech engages a separate tang, for ease of cleaning after shooting. The hooked breech is easily dismounted for cleaning. Two wedge keys are fitted through oval iron inlays. Close the frizzen, then after pressing out the two wedge keys from the forend, withdraw the ramrod, and lift the muzzle end to unhook the breech. The wooden ramrod is fitted with brass tips. The rear tip is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
The lock is color case hardened and uses a 5/8" by 3/4" flint for best performance, our #FLINT-ENG-5. The stainless steel touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. Double lever double set triggers are fitted, for target shooting, or hunting. The triggers are well adjusted, to allow cocking the lock, or setting the trigger, in any sequence. You may fire the rifle with the trigger set, for a hair trigger release. Or, fire this rifle with the trigger unset, for a firm normal trigger release, ideal for cold weather hunting, or youth training.
